Colorful crowd
Shin Heung-woo
Row Gallery presents the invitational solo exhibition *Colorful Crowd* by artist Shin Heung-woo from March 1 (Sun) to March 31 (Tue), 2026.
This exhibition showcases both representative and new works by Shin Heung-woo, an artist who has explored the diverse relationships and emotions of modern society through colorful hues and groups of figures. The artist expresses the coexistence of individuality and collectivity revealed within a crowd through unique color palettes and rhythmic compositions, allowing viewers to experience a perspective that is both familiar and unfamiliar.
Figures composed of different colors and forms harmonize within a single frame, visually unraveling how beings with their own individual stories connect and collide. Rather than erasing or emphasizing specific identities, the figures filling the canvas are reduced to formative elements of color and form, while simultaneously revealing a strong presence. This mode of expression metaphorically reveals the complex aspects of the relationships we form with the countless others we encounter in our daily lives. Artist Shin Heung-woo emphasizes the subtle differences among the individual beings that constitute a crowd through the methods of repetition and variation, accumulating the unique rhythm and energy of each figure within the canvas. Consequently, the work expands beyond a mere visual aggregation into a single organic field that is constantly moving and breathing. As viewers shift their gaze before this scene to discover distinct figures, they experience a sensation of becoming part of the crowd themselves in the process.
This exhibition provides an opportunity to re-examine the existence of "self" within the collective landscape of the crowd. While gazing at the figures in the artworks, we become aware that our gaze is simultaneously turning back toward ourselves. By posing questions about the self formed within relationships with others and the modes of coexistence created by different beings, the exhibition offers viewers a time to reflect anew on their own position and emotions.
