Chae Rimm
b. 1963 ㅣ REPUBLIC OF KOREA
Chae Rim was born in Seoul in 1963. She was interested in art since childhood and wanted to go to art school, but her father opposed her and she majored in French literature at Ewha Womans University and its graduate school. By chance, she came across a tiara (small crown) exhibition at the Boston Museum, which led her to become fascinated by the beauty of jewelry. After that, Chae Rim began to build a solid career as a jewelry designer. She presented bold and unique designs in the wearable art genre at overseas exhibitions, winning numerous awards. However, Chae Rim felt regretful that jewelry would stay in a safe when not being worn, so she turned to being an artist. Then, she began to create lacquer supports that would make jewelry stand out the most in order to install it on the wall like a work of art. She created her own ‘Jewelry Painting.’ Through this, the artist, who fell in love with traditional lacquerware, visited Wonju, the largest lacquerware production site in Korea, every day to receive instruction from a dedicated craftsman. After persistent practice and work, she developed her own technique of expressing texture and pointillism. Even today, the artist continues to study at the Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Lacquer Art, Kyoto Urushi Center, etc.
Chae Rim graduated from Ewha Womans University and received her master’s degree from the same university. She obtained her international gem appraisal license in 2009 and is a member of the International Association of André Malraux and the French Society of Copyrights of Plastic Arts. In 2016, she held solo exhibitions in succession at famous galleries overseas, including Princeton Gallery (New Jersey, USA), Gallery BDMC (Paris), and Able Fine Art Gallery (New York). She has participated in group exhibitions and art fairs held at prestigious institutions in Korea and abroad, including Saatchi Gallery (London), Grand Palais (Paris), and Pier 94 (New York). He has received numerous awards, including the Leonardo da Vinci Art Award (Florence, Italy), New York Art Expo (New York), International Heritage Exhibition (Carrousel du Louvre, Paris), the 30th Japan International Pearl Design Contest (Mikimoto, Tokyo), and the Asia Facet Award (JDMI Signity, Hong Kong).
